Access to ImageJ for AS/DS 434

Download Platform Independent To install ImageJ on a computer with Java pre-installed, or to upgrade to the latest full distribution (including macros, plugins and LUTs), download the ZIP archive (6MB) and extract the ImageJ directory. Use the HelpUpdate ImageJ command to upgrade to newer versions. Download ImageJ (64-bit) for Windows to process images and develop Java applications. ImageJ is a free open source application to process.


File Compression
The Image J program that can be downloaded from this web site has been compressed into a .zip file. Before it can be used Image J must be expanded. The software you use to do this depends on whether the resources are for Windows or Mac.

  • Windows (without Java - suggested if your computer is recently new)

Often these files will automatically unzip when double clicked but if they should not then use the free program Stuffit Expander.

Windows
These windows files (tested on windows XP) contain an exec command that will automatically configure the program on your computer with you providing just a little bit of information. It is suggested to put the alias on your desktop to start the program when needed. Once done, close the imageJ program if you have launched it. Go to the ImageJ folder and delete from that folder the following:

Mac
  1. IJ.jar file (on PC you may only see it as IJ).
  2. Delete the 'plugins' folder.
  3. Delete the 'macros' folder.

Xcode for 10.13.6. Now download the following files and put them into the imageJ folder.

  1. plugins folder (This file is zipped and needs to be unziped before you can copy it into the imageJ folder. In windows XP you double click on the zipped file and then select extract all files to complete the unzipping process. If you have another unzipping program follow the instructions to unzip all files.
  2. macros folder (This is also a zipped file of this folder.)

The program should now work as described for Lab 12. ImageJ can however be used for many other image analysis applications. See the ImageJ website at NIH for more information and the latest upgrades if you are using it something beyond the lab 12 exercise. Keep in mind we have modified the ij.jar file and the files in the macros and plugins folders to make commands specific to the 434 laboratory.
